Drivers in Nigeria are complaining about suspected adulterated petrol in the market as fuel scarcity in Nigeria deepens.
One of the motorists, who craved anonymity, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday, said "I am using a Mitsubishi Lancer, a 1.6 litre engine capacity. I bought 20 litres of petrol at 150 per litre to fill my tank on Saturday evening for a journey to Lagos.
"By the time I got to the long bridge at Isheri, I have to switch off the air condition of the car, because, after looking at the fuel guage, the remaining fuel in the car could not take me back to Ibadan. I want to believe the fuel in circulation are adulterated and if care is not taken, it may have adverse effect on vehicles."
Another motorist, a woman, who also does not want her name in print, told the Nigerian Tribune that "I bought 30 litres of petrol into a Toyota Sienna on Thursday and, by Friday, after going to few places, I noticed that the fuel in the car had reduced faster than usual.
"In fact, I initially thought that the fuel tank was leaking somewhere until I discovered that there was nothing of such. I want to advise relevant authorities such as Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to do the needful, by ensuring that the petroleum product to be distributed is of better quality," she said..
Mr Akindele Oluwole, who drives a Nissan Extera SUV, also told the Nigerian Tribune that he bought N4,000 when travelling to Ijebu-Ode from Ibadan and before he could get to Idi-Ayunre, in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State, the low fuel warning light in the car had started blinking.
"I do not know how to describe this kind of harship. The product is being sold to us at a very high cost without any explanation from anybody on reasons for the hike. Now, the product is not even serving the purpose satisfactorily," he lamented.
Also speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, Mrs Morenikeji Alowonle lamented the rate at which petrol dries up in her power generator set, adding that "what normally takes us for two days now get exhausted within few hours."
